What the brain is actually loading
REM consolidates emotional and autobiographical material. Place maps that are culturally overtrained — a mountain silhouette you have seen a thousand times — are cheap for the dream engine to cast when belonging, duty, grief, or return-plans are unfinished waking business. That is continuity and place-memory, not ark symbolism.
