The first REM episode usually opens around ninety minutes after sleep onset and lasts on the order of ten minutes. Each later cycle tends to lengthen the REM share until the pre-dawn window can run forty to sixty minutes — the densest hardware pass for dream recall.

Why morning dreams feel “more real”

Longer REM + rising circadian wake pressure = richer narrative packing and easier recall on the alarm. That is buffer length and arousal chemistry, not proof the dream was more “important” in a mystical sense. Fragmented nights change the map
