Why I built the Sleep Cycle Calculator

Decode is the reading you want when a dream is still in your chest. But most nights do not need a language model. They need a planning tool that respects how sleep is structured.

Human sleep moves in ultradian blocks that average around 90 minutes — NREM into REM, then again, four to six times a night. That rhythm is not a lifehack invented on the internet. It sits in the classic EEG work of Dement & Kleitman and in Kleitman’s broader rest–activity cycle. Cycle length is not a perfect clock — roughly 70–110 minutes, shifting across the night — so a good tool offers a window of options, not one rigid number.

Sleep inertia is not a personality flaw. It is what happens when an alarm cuts mid-cycle.

The problem I kept living

I kept waking with that thick, delayed clarity — reaction time off, mood flat, body still halfway in slow-wave or REM. The literature name is sleep inertia. It is strongest when you interrupt deep NREM. It is milder when you surface near a cycle boundary, in lighter sleep.

So I built a calculator that does only one job: take a wake time or a bedtime, add a realistic sleep-onset buffer (~14 minutes), and count in ~90-minute steps so you can land between cycles instead of inside one.

Why this belongs in the Lab, not behind Decode

This tool sends no data to a server. No API. No login. That is intentional. Oneirox is becoming a laboratory you run with your hands — Mapper, Phase, Cycles, somatic profiles — with Lab Search as the flagship reading when the dream itself needs a mechanism-based answer.

What the calculator will not do

It will not diagnose insomnia, apnea, or depression. It will not promise that a 06:30 alarm is “optimized spirituality.” It will show a handful of boundary times so you are less likely to cut a slow-wave well or a fat late REM episode. Individual cycles vary; illness, alcohol, and newborns smash the model. Use it as a boundary finder.

I keep this instrument in the Lab with zero API because planning math should not require surrendering a dream text to a model. Decode is for when the night still sits in the chest. Cycles is for when you are setting a clock. If you want the physiology of why late REM feels cinematic, read REM cycle timing. If you want lunar context for a dated night, use Phase (Cajochen, not astrology).

The ~14-minute sleep-onset buffer is a population-ish courtesy, not your personal latency. If you take an hour to fall asleep, add that in your head. The 90-minute step is Kleitman’s neighborhood, not a metronome. I would rather ship an honest window than a fake precision score.
